Micro asphalting

We are carrying out a road surface treatment called micro asphalting across the county, starting later this year.

Last year, we used micro asphalt to repair residential roads to seal the road surface and prevent water causing any further damage, especially in freezing conditions. We often use micro asphalt to treat cul-de-sacs, as the constant turning by vehicles can damage and wear away other types of road surface.

Micro asphalt can extend the life of the road surface by up to 10 years and helps to improve skid resistance.

The material is laid over the existing road surface and includes stones of varying sizes and cement, mixed into liquid bitumen.

The process involves laying 2 applications of the liquid mix, which is able to fill minor potholes to create a smooth new road surface. It can be laid in as little as 20 minutes, helping to minimise inconvenience for local residents and road users.

Micro asphalt is applied cold, making it ideal to lay in cooler weather conditions as low as 5°C. The weather needs to be dry which can lead to last minute changes to the programme as we may have to postpone some repairs if it is raining.

We'll drop leaflets door-to-door in areas where we will carry out the repairs, and erect warning signs in advance, to make sure people are aware of when the works will take place.

This year, we will use micro asphalt to treat 124 roads across Derbyshire, covering 98,000 square metres at a total cost of £1 million pounds.

The work was undertaken by our contractor Kiely Brothers and was completed in late October 2023.

To help us complete the micro asphalt with minimum inconvenience and on time, please remember to:

  • park your car on a neighbouring street to avoid us having to cancel the repairs
  • try to avoid any sudden braking or steering manoeuvres on the new surface until it has fully dried
  • take care at junctions until we have replaced the give way and centre line road markings
